Issues
Higher Education – Unbridled growth in higher education costs today is suppressing – if not outright denying – opportunities for many who desire to further their education. In an economy where post-secondary education is considered essential, we must work to make it accessible, of value, and not throw up roadblocks. Our goal must be greater affordability, efficiency and accountability to students, parents and taxpayers.
Fiscal Responsibility – It has been a privilege to be a member of the legislature working in tandem with Governor Daniels to bring fiscal responsibility to Indiana since 2005 when I got to vote YES for Indiana’s first balanced budget in almost a decade. Indiana recently received Standard and Poor’s highest bond rating – AAA – indicating our continued progress. We must be vigilant and maintain fiscal responsibility.
K-12 Education – No Child Left Behind did a reasonable job of pointing out the shortcomings of today’s K-12 education, but, it’s done a less than admirable job advancing solutions. It is time for Indiana to get education RIGHT, to think anew the way we engage students to cultivate their love of learning, determine the role of the marketplace, and truly, truly leave no child behind.
Illegal Immigration – Inaction on illegal immigration at the federal level does not negate the fact that WE NEED TO KNOW WHO IS IN THIS COUNTRY, PERIOD! The presence of illegal immigrants impacts our national security, economy, crime rate and usage of public services. We must make cogent decisions on this topic that secure and stabilize Indiana and America.
Property Taxes - Last session legislation was passed that brought transparency, caps and other measures to stabilize property taxes. However, those measures will not bring assured, continuing relief unless they are based on assessments that are consistently fair, timely and predictable. As a state, we are not there yet. This must be a priority focus of this coming session, or we will have built a second story on a vacant lot. It is also essential that local governments have adequate revenue streams.
Family Values – Strengthen and encourage strong families – the most basic building block of our society – by valuing marriage, life, involved parenting, and doing it all with compassion.
Jobs and Economic Development – Indiana must continue to diversify its economy and provide a business friendly environment to companies of all sizes. It is no mistake that Indiana has nurtured a broad array of companies, some of which will surge in size, sales, and employees throughout our state and beyond. Strong economic development will mean satisfying and challenging employment in a variety of sectors.
